Introduction
Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio began one of American cinema’s most significant director/actor collaborations when Scorsese cast DiCaprio in Gangs of New York (2002). A pivotal time for both men, Scorsese was seeking a younger actor capable of anchoring large-scale, character-driven projects. DiCaprio, emerging from teen-idol fame, was looking to work with filmmakers who could help reshape his on-screen image. An 18-year-old DiCaprio bumped into Scorsese, leaving a party in Greenwich Village. Scorsese recognized DiCaprio from What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) and stated:
“Hey, kid, you did a terrific job in that picture. I hope we get to work together one day.”

Cut to almost a decade later, and the pair would begin work on the first of six feature films together, Gangs of New York (2002). This was followed by The Aviator (2004), The Departed (2006), Shutter Island (2010), The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), and Killers of the Flower Moon (2023). The result was over $1.5 billion in worldwide gross and Scorsese’s first Best Director Academy Award win for The Departed.
What Happens at Night
The duo’s next film, What Happens at Night, appears ready to commence filming next month in Prague, as per a new report. This exciting news emerges as DiCaprio and Scorsese spoke about their friendship and collaborative partnership at the “A Year in TIME” event that was held in New York City on December 10. The upcoming film was first announced back in September, with fellow Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence set to star opposite DiCaprio. With three Oscar winners (Leo won Best Actor for The Revenant in 2015) locked in, expectations are sky high.

What Happens at Night is a collaboration between Apple Original Films and Studiocanal. Peter Cameron’s novel is being adapted for the screen by Patrick Marber (Notes on a Scandal). According to The InSneider, Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) is set to co-star with DiCaprio and Lawrence. No other casting announcements have been officially made as of this writing. Rodrigo Prieto (The Wolf of Wall Street, The Irishman, Killers of the Flower Moon) is once again behind the camera for Scorsese. As soon as we have more news, you’ll read about it here!
